QR Installation

An Installation of Codes Connecting Physical and Information Space

Abstract / Overview

QR Installation is a project that uses QR codes not merely as symbols for retrieving information, but as interfaces connecting physical space and information space. Through the act of scanning, place, body, device, and information become connected, allowing the work to emerge through each encounter.

QR Installation is a project begun in 2020. It treats the QR code not only as a practical sign for accessing information, but as an interface connecting physical space with information space.
A QR code may appear as a visual pattern with little meaning on its own. Once it is scanned with a device, however, a connection is activated. Place, body, device, network, and displayed information become part of a single event.
The work therefore does not reside only in the printed or displayed code. It emerges through the act of scanning, the location of that act, the information reached through the code, the screen of the device, and the movement or decision of the viewer.
QR Installation does not treat physical objects and digital information as completely separate domains. The QR code creates a temporary point of connection, opening access to information space from within a physical location. At the same time, digital information gains a concrete position through its relation to place and bodily action.
This structure extends the problem of interface already present in Web Installation into physical space more directly. Access to the Web no longer remains confined to a screen, but becomes connected to location, movement, bodily action, and choice. The work emerges as an event grounded in reality.
From the later perspective of Generative Studies, QR Installation can be understood as a practice that does not merge different spatial phases into one unified field. Instead, it treats the surface of connection itself as the work. The QR code does not present a completed meaning; it functions as a trigger that opens a relation. Workhood appears through the connections and possibilities made available by that trigger.
