Rethinking Art through the Derivative Structures of Value and Meaning
Abstract / Overview
Derivative Art is a project that examines how the value and meaning of an artwork do not reside solely within the object itself, but are generated derivatively through reference, evaluation, institutions, exchange, language, and relations with others. The artwork is reconsidered not as a fixed entity, but as a generative structure constituted through multiple relations and references.

Derivative Art is a project begun in 2018. Its central question concerns whether the value and meaning of an artwork can be understood as fixed qualities contained entirely within the work itself.
The project takes the idea of derivation as a starting point. A value may arise not only from a thing itself, but also from the relations, references, evaluations, and conditions surrounding it. Derivative Art applies this structural question to artistic practice and examines how the meaning and value of a work emerge through its wider relational environment.
A physical object does not become fully constituted as an artwork simply by existing. Its meaning may change according to its maker, its place of presentation, the people who encounter it, the language used to describe it, and the cultural or institutional context in which it appears. Workhood is therefore approached not as a closed property of an object, but as something generated through connections extending beyond that object.
Derivation here is not merely a metaphor borrowed from economics. It describes a structure in which something does not remain self-contained, but changes through references to other objects, words, institutions, evaluations, and histories. Art provides a particularly clear field in which such structures can become visible.
This inquiry later develops into the theory of Linguistic Derivatives. Language does not provide a completely transparent path to an object. Meaning emerges through previous usages, contexts, differences, citations, and interpretations. In this sense, both artworks and language acquire meaning through wider networks of relation.
From the later perspective of Generative Studies, Derivative Art marks an important movement away from understanding existence, value, and meaning as fixed substances. They are instead approached as phenomena that arise through relation and connection. The project therefore focuses not only on the completed artwork, but also on the wider relational structures through which its workhood becomes possible.
