Web Installation
The Origin of Interface Art Connecting Reality and Information Space
Abstract / Overview
A project that treats the Web not merely as a site for displaying artworks, but as an interface connecting reality and information space, with the viewer’s access itself becoming a condition of the work’s generation.
Full Text
Web Installation is a project begun in 2010 and constitutes one of the early practices that later developed into Generative Studies and interface ontology. Here, the Web is not treated as a neutral medium for presenting completed artworks, but as an interface connecting reality and information space, humans and nonhumans, viewing and generation. The work does not exist as a fixed object; rather, it is generated each time through events such as access, display, connection, and updating. The viewer therefore does not remain outside the work as a spectator, but becomes part of the relational conditions through which the work comes into being. Web Installation approaches the artwork not as a thing but as the generation of relations and possibilities of connection, forming an important foundation for later concepts such as Generative Topological Ontology, self-externalization, grounding in reality, and interface art.
